:: La Rioja
La Rioja is a small region in the north of Spain with nearly 300.000 inhabitants. It has a large history and its localization and weather makes this place a wonderful natural environment.
The region is widely known in the rest of Europe as part of the Jacobs Route. Although, perhaps, most of you know La Rioja for its wines. Our vineries are magnificent and very beautiful, architecturally speaking, to be visited. Among scientific sessions we will have the opportunity to drink these wonderful nectars.
The Monasteries
One of the most important architectural and cultural interest stand in our Monasteries. About 27 Km from Logroño begins the Monasteries Route. Surrounded by forests and mountains we find five important cultural sites, to name a few:
Santa Maria La Real, located in Nájera, which has been declared National Heritage.
A few kilometres South we find the Monasteries of Suso and Yuso in San Millán de la Cogolla. Here we find the first documented texts written in the Spanish and Basque languages back in the 10th century. It is considered as the birthplace of the Spanish and Basque languages and declared in 1997 a World Heritage site by the Unesco.
Following the route we find the Monastery of Valvanera, where the patron virgin of La Rioja is kept.
And going back to the Ebro Valley, we find the Cañas Monastery, which are one of the most interesting examples of Cistercian architecture and one of the oldest female religious institutions of the history of Christianity.
